8 days has this joke on a man who totally can't handle technology. I laughed. At the same time, I see myself in the same situation. Only that, I can handle technology moderately. Not as handicapped as the man in the joke. I'm not sure if I can share the joke here becos it's copyrighted. Just flip through 8 days, it's at the second last page I think.
Anyhow, as I was saying, I do handle technology moderately. No association with the term 'IT savvy'. A laptop to me simply serves as a work desk that does normal emailing, facebooking, blogging, etc. Simply put, laptop is all about internet to me. It doesn't have much functions given my brief understandings of how those programmes like Photoshop, Flash, etc work. I'm comfortable with my limited knowledge becos I believe there're people who're more noob than I am. hee. I'm not interviewing for a position as chief IT officer.
Exploring new technology has never been my perimeter of interests. Whenever I buy a new handphone, I'll just make sure all my contacts are there, ringtone is not the default 'ring-ring-ring' and I can comfortably and efficiently send messages; I've pretty much "played" with my new toy.
Thinking of gadgets that I own (not many to begin with). My proudest buy would be the iPod Touch last Sept. I took some time considering if I should need it. Honestly, I don't need it. But, it's one of the few rare occasions that I actually am interested in a particular gadget. At first, I thought it was the coolest gadget Apple has came up with and I wanna own one badly. For its extra functions - websurfing, IMs, games, applications, photo albums, organiser, what else? Months after I bought it, the iPod Touch is merely an iPod to me. Fundamentally, it plays music. During boring train rides, I'll keep myself occupied with Bejeweled. Nothing more. Sometimes, I find it such a hassle to use unlike my iPod shuffle that only has one function. Oh well, it's hard to balance advancements and convenience.
I feel we should not be boiled down by the complexity of technology with ten thousands and one functions in one tiny mini gadget. Why should we allow technology to make our life hard when it's already tough! I'm truly amazed by anyone who can handle Photoshop like how I win a mahjong game effortlessly. My knowledge in Photoshop will always be at adjusting image size, contrasting, and add in those effects that are preset in the program. Photoshoppers, I salute you. I shall not go on to talk about Excel and now, even Powerpoint has become tougher to use than before. Frontpage, Publisher, what's that? Noooo..
Believe it or not, laptop and its programmes are not the only issues I have. I've difficulties with those gaming gadgets too. PSP, Wii, PS3, Xbox, DS lite bla bla bla. There was once, I tried to play with my cousin's PSP and I don't know how to on it! After my cousin on it for me, I tried to familarise myself with the simplest game and I just couldn't do it. Yes, I suck that badly. Somehow, my nerves/brain cells responsible for gaming and IT related stuffs are under-developed. If I even have them at all.
In essence, I'm just not good with anything too technological. Even a simple camera can cause me to lose my patience, you don't want know more. But, technology has become an intergral part of our lives. We depend on them daily. Despite being digitally-impaired, I very much need my laptop, handphone and iPod. It will kill me to pass a day without them. We're all parasites of technology afterall.
